Anselmo I del Monferrato was a medieval noble of Italian origin and a prominent figure in the Crusades. He was born in the 11th century and was the son of William V, Marquess of Montferrat. Following his father's death, Anselmo succeeded him as the Marquess of Montferrat.
Anselmo was a participant in the Crusades and fought in battles against both Muslims and Byzantines. He was also a supporter of the Knights Templar and made donations to the order. In 1120, Anselmo founded the Abbey of Santa Maria in Vezzolano, which he endowed with various lands and privileges.
Anselmo had several wives and numerous children. One of his sons, William Longsword, also became a prominent figure in Crusades history as the leader of the Fourth Crusade.
Anselmo died in 1141 and was buried in the Abbey of Santa Maria in Vezzolano. He is remembered as a skilled warrior and a devout Christian who played an important role in the Crusades and the development of the region of Montferrat.
